In 2023, 307 Australian law offices, employing over 9,700 people, reported their employment and staffing experiences as of 1 January 2023, making it the most comprehensive, independent HR and remuneration study (including actual salaries paid) within the legal industry.
Overall, average wages in the Australian legal industry increased by 4.1%, outstripping national wage growth of 3.3%.
Employment growth increased slightly over the last twelve months, meeting pre-pandemic levels. The percent of law firms increasing their headcount climbed to 44% over 2022 — up from 34% in 2021 — while the percent of firms that decreased their staffing numbers stayed steady at 22%.
Nearly four out of five firms intend to recruit solicitors and lawyers in 2023, whereas intention to recruit executive or management roles over 2023 has fallen to 4%.
