Through ALPMA, and thanks to legalsuper, you can now access Mental Health First Aid Australia’s (MHFA) blended MHFA training course that has been tailored to legal industry.  Currently this course is only available for Australians.

This blended online course is a combination of self-paced online (eLearning) component (approx. 6-8 hours to complete) followed by 2 x 2.5-hour online (via Zoom) training session. The Standard Mental Health First Aid for Legal Professionals course teaches participants how to provide initial support to a co-worker, client or another adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem and the treatments and supports available. Within the general community there is a high prevalence of mental illness with 1 in 5 people suffering a mental health problem in any given year, however there is an even higher prevalence within the legal sector with 1 in 3 people experiencing a mental health problem in any given year.

This might include (but is not limited to) depression, anxiety, substance abuse or stress, at a level that is considered unhealthy. Early recognition of signs and symptoms can lead to a return to usual performance quickly and can alleviate the problem worsening.

Would you know how to assist a co-worker who was experiencing a mental health problem?
It’s important that you do, but it is equally as important that multiple people within your firm know how to assist too. MHFA Training should be encouraged across seniority, departments and genders to ensure diversity of support.
